Blind Charlotte area runner completes ‘Dopey Challenge’

Susan Moriceau, a visually impaired runner from the Charlotte area, achieved an impressive feat at the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend. Over the course of four days, she conquered all four races, including the 26.2-mile marathon on Sunday at Walt Disney World Resort.

Working as a business consultant, Moriceau, accompanied by her husband, participated in the 5K on Thursday, the 10K on Friday, the half marathon on Saturday, and the marathon on Sunday, collectively known as the Dopey Challenge. Despite adverse weather conditions leading to a shortened half marathon, she covered a total distance of over 42 miles, earning six remarkable medals.

Moriceau, who battles retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic condition causing gradual vision loss, demonstrated incredible determination. Her visual impairment, worsening over the past four years, posed challenges during running, but her unwavering trust in her husband enabled her to courageously persevere.

Supported by her husband throughout, Moriceau navigated through Disney theme parks and connected roads to complete each race. The Sunday marathon, featuring routes through Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, proved to be the most demanding.

Finishing the challenging yet enjoyable race in 5 hours, 51 minutes, and 8 seconds, Moriceau and her husband, sharing smiles and hugs at the finish line, pledged to return for the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend next year.

The event attracted thousands of runners from across the nation and worldwide, offering a unique blend of Disney entertainment, characters, and a camaraderie-filled atmosphere among participants of all ages and skill levels. The weekend included a 5K, a 10K, a rain-shortened half marathon, and a full marathon, along with a health and fitness expo.
