Hurricane Idalia update: Disney closing water park, Universal normal operations

Walt Disney World will be closing its water park on Wednesday while its four theme parks will remain open and Universal Orlando plans to open its parks during normal hours as well.

The announcements come as the fringes of Hurricane Idalia have reached the Orlando area at 5:30 p.m., bringing rain and thunderstorms.

The storm now has 100 mph winds as it cross the Gulf of Mexico. Life-threatening storm surge inundation is likely elsewhere along portions of the Florida Gulf Coast where a Storm Surge Warning is in effect. Residents in these areas should follow any advice given by local officials, according to the National Hurricane Center.

There is the potential for destructive life-threatening winds where the core of Idalia moves onshore in the Big Bend region of Florida as a Category 3 storm , with hurricane conditions expected elsewhere in portions of the Hurricane Warning area along the Florida Gulf Coast.

The Disney World area is under a Tropical Storm Warning with potential for 39 to 57 mph winds with rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches with higher amounts possible in certain areas.
