Disney World to layoff 6,700 non-union workers in December

A notice from the Walt Disney Co. to the state says about 6,700 non-union workers will be laid off starting Dec. 4, the Orlando Sentinel is reporting.

The notice, which has not yet been posted on the state website, does not provide a breakdown of the positions being eliminated, according to the report.

On Tuesday, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Division Chairman Josh D’Amaro announced that his division will be laying off about 28,000 cast members due to the coronavirus.

Union leaders have said they have begun negotiations with Disney about this and the impact to its members.

Performers at Disney World are also starting to get notices of layoffs, including  The Grand Floridian Society Orchestra, Yehaa’ Bob Jackson, and performers at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort.

Disney cited the prolonged impact of COVID-19, including limited capacity due to physical distancing, the uncertainty of how long this will go on and the difficulty Disney is having with the state of California to lift restrictions for Disneyland to reopen as the reasons behind the decision for layoffs.
