Mulan will be Disney’s next live-action remake

Disney has yet another live-action remake of an animated film in the works: “Mulan.”
The story of a young woman who disguises herself as a man so she can take her father’s place in the army, “Mulan” earned $300 million worldwide when it was released in 1998. That’s just under $600 million in today’s dollars; by comparison, last year’s live-action “Maleficent” earned $758 million.
The movie will be based on a script by writing team Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek, according to the Hollywood Reporter. There is no word on casting or a possible release date.

Mulan was a groundbreaking venture, featuring an ass-kicking heroine that saved the day well before the likes of Katniss Everdeen or Tris Prior. In addition, Mulan is one of the few non-white princesses within the realm of Disney. So it’s thrilling news that Disney’s working on a live-action adaptation for two major reasons: They’re bringing to life a princess that’s a racial minority, and also offering an entire cast of characters to play for Asian actors, who are criminally underrepresented onscreen.
Disney has a number of live-action remakes on its schedule, including Beauty and the Beast (2016), the Jungle Book (2017) and Dumbo (TBD).
