National Weather Service issues heat advisory for June 18 at Disney World

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from 2 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 18 for a number of counties in central Florida, including Orange and Osceola, where Disney World is located.

Heat index values are expected to go up to 111 degrees. The hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat and illness, according to the National Weather Service.

It will be mostly sunny and hot with a high near 97, but the heat index will make it feel as high as 111.

There is also a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon as well, but that is not expected to bring a lot of relief from the heat or the heat advisory at Disney World, according to the National Weather Service.

For those visiting Disney World here are some tips on how to survive the heat:

Stay hydrated: This is the most obvious advice, but drink plenty of fluids. Before you head to the park make sure you are hydrated and keep stopping to get water throughout the day. You can ask for a cup at almost any quick service and get water, but I would suggest taking a bottle of water with you so that you can keep filling up during the day. Take at least a few sips every hour. Take a few swigs after each ride and make sure you are ready for outdoor lines. Now, this might also mean you will also have a tour of the many restrooms around the parks, but remember, the restrooms have air conditioning.

Find some air-conditioning: This might mean spending more time in shops than you usually do, but is that really bad? The indoor rides will also provide a respite, but if you want to spend some more time indoors look for these attractions:

  • Magic Kingdom: Country Bear Jamboree, The Hall of Presidents, Mickey’s PhilharMagic , Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress and Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room.
  • EPCOT: The American Adventure, Canada Far and Wide in Circle-Vision 360, Disney and Pixar Short Film Festival.
  • Hollywood Studios: Muppet*Vision 3D
  • Animal Kingdom: It’s Tough to be a Bug!, A Celebration Festival of the Lion King and Finding Nemo: The Big Blue…and Beyond!.

Go to the parks early and late: The middle of the day, from 1 to 5 p.m., is normally the hottest, and the most crowded. So taking advantage of the early morning and returning later will help keep you cool.

Take a cooling towel: I wasn’t a big believer in these things, but after using them on extremely hot days, I became a convert.

Wear a hat or visor: This might seem obvious or ridiculous if you feel the hat only makes your head hotter. But, a hat or visor will protect your face, which you will be happy for in the strong summer sun.

Go on water rides, tour the splash pads: Splash Mountain at Magic Kingdom and Kali River Rapids should help bring some relief. Also, as you walk the parks you might also see misting stations and splash pads. Go ahead, get wet.

Got to the pool: Head back to your resort for a break and spend some time in the pool. You deserve a break and a dip in the pool is the best antidote for the heat.

Go to Typhoon Lagoon: If you are looking for one park where there is water everywhere, well, go the water park. There’s a surf pool, lazy rivers, slides, and a water playground for kids, places for adults and water, water everywhere. No reservations are required for this park.
