New details reveal a wilder, more supernatural Big Thunder Mountain

A new kind of magic will be rumbling through the mines of the Magic Kingdom. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, a Frontierland staple, is set to reopen in 2026 after a comprehensive refurbishment, and new details released recently by Disney reveal a more immersive and perhaps more menacing story for riders.

The update to the classic attraction delves deeper into the lore of the “wildest ride in the wilderness.” The storyline harks back to the “Golden Times” of America’s first major gold rush, introducing Barnabas T. Bullion, a determined prospector who founded the Big Thunder Mountain Company after striking gold. But Bullion’s quest for riches, it turns out, came with a heavy cost.

According to Disney, a supernatural element began to plague Bullion’s operation. Strange occurrences, including failing machinery and sudden cave-ins, began to thwart the miners’ efforts. The mountain, it seems, fought back against those who dared to dig too deep.

This narrative will be a central theme of the refreshed attraction. Passengers on the runaway mine trains will experience firsthand the untamed forces of nature—and something more—that have taken hold of the mountain.

Beyond the expanded story, the refurbished ride will feature new show elements. One of the most anticipated additions is a journey through “spectacular natural caverns.” As the train hurtles through the mountain, riders will encounter phosphorescent pools and shimmering, iridescent stalagmites and stalactites, creating a visually stunning, bioluminescent landscape.

However, Disney cautions that these new “Rainbow Caverns” are not as friendly as they appear. The familiar thunderous rumble of the mountain will now serve as a sign of an unwelcome presence, suggesting that the forces of Big Thunder are more powerful—and perhaps more malevolent—than ever before.

The refurbishment, described as a “mountain-top to cavern-deep” overhaul, is intended to keep the beloved ride in “tip-top shape” for years to come. But with the promise of new magic and a more menacing story, it’s clear the update is about more than just a fresh coat of paint. It’s about bringing a new level of wildness to the wildest ride in the wilderness.

Disney first created a new backstory for the ride in 2012 when the ride was last closed for an extended refurbishment. It was then we were introduced with this story – “Barnabas T. Bullion is the founder and president of the Big Thunder Mining Company. The longtime mining magnate comes from a powerful East Coast family and considers gold to be his very birthright . . . he considers the ultimate gold strike to be his destiny. And that is why he is having so much trouble with Big Thunder Mountain. According to superstitious locals, Big Thunder Mountain is very protective of the gold it holds within, and the unfortunate soul who attempts to mine its riches is destined to fail. And so far that prophecy is coming to pass. The mine has been plagued by mysterious forces and natural disasters ever since. . . a word to the wise for anyone attempting to visit the mountain: watch out for runaway trains.”
