Major change coming to Disney Genie+ at Disney World starting June 8

Starting June 8, 2022, you will only be able to purchase the Disney Genie+ service, the service that allows you to use Lightning Lanes, through the My Disney Experience app only on the day of your visit to Walt Disney World, Disney announced this morning.

There is currently an option to purchase the service pre-arrival as a ticket add-on. If you already purchased a ticket that includes Disney Genie+ service for dates later in 2022, don’t worry, you will be able to use the service on your visit.

The service has been in high-demand, during the holiday season almost half of all guests paid for the Genie+ service to access the Lightning Lanes, Disney CEO Bob Chapek said during an earnings call in February. Prior to that about one-third of all guests were purchasing the service.

For an extra $15 per day per ticket for Disney Genie+ you can use the Lightning Lanes (the former FastPass lanes) to help cut back on how long you will need to wait in line. You need Genie+, to skip lines at more than 40 attractions. There are eight “headliner” attractions you need to purchase separately as part of Individual Lightning Lanes selections

Here is the complete announcement:

Starting June 8, Disney Genie+ will only be offered for purchase through the My Disney Experience app on the day of your visit – we will no longer offer the option to purchase this service pre-arrival as a ticket add-on for dates remaining in 2022 and in 2023.

This means that, moving forward, whether you have an Annual Pass, multi- or single-day ticket, you may only purchase Disney Genie+ service on the day of your visit via the app, one day at a time, subject to availability. We’re focused on delivering the best possible guest experience, and this adjustment will help manage the incredibly strong demand our guests have shown for Disney Genie+.

We expect that, on average, guests who purchase Disney Genie+ service will continue to enter 2-3 attractions or experiences each day using the Lightning Lane entrance when the first selection is made early in the day.

If you already purchased a ticket that includes Disney Genie+ service for dates later in 2022, don’t worry – you’ll be able to use the service during your visit. Please also note this update is also only happening at Walt Disney World Resort and will not affect guests at Disneyland Resort, as the services vary at each destination.

We are listening to your feedback and are exploring ways to make our theme park services better and easier to use – we’ll stay in touch about future updates to help you prepare and plan.
