3 new Star Wars film release dates announced, Avatar films pushed back

Disney has scheduled the release dates of the next three Star Wars films while pushing back the Avatar sequels another year.

The one big takeaway from the change is that Disney is trying to lock up the December holiday movie box office with the release of either Star Wars or Avatar movies.

This December we will see “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”

Disney revamped its film release schedule announcing that the next three Star Wars films will be released in theaters on Dec. 16, 2022, Dec. 20, 2024 and Dec. 18, 2026.

In doing this, Disney has moved back the long-awaited follow-ups to James Cameron’s “Avatar.” “Avatar 2” will now be released on Dec. 17, 2021, instead of in 2020. The remainder of the Avatar movies will be released as follows: “Avatar 3” on Dec. 22, 2023, “Avatar 4” on Dec. 19, 2025, and “Avatar 5” on Dec. 17, 2027.

Taking up the holiday slack in 2020 will be Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” adaptation” will on Dec. 18 and “Cruella” on Dec. 23

What those Star Wars films will be is unknown, but it is mot likely the new trilogy already announced by Rian Johnson. According to a previous announcement, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.
