Marvel Studios’ Black Panther wins 3 Oscars

Marvel Studios came away with its first Oscars during the 91st Academy Awards thanks to Ryan Coogler’s “Black Panther.”

The billion-dollar blockbuster entered the night with seven nominations, including one for Best Picture, but in the ended up walking away with three.

Ruth Carter won for Best Costume Design in a Motion Picture. Not only making Marvel history, by taking home the companies first Oscar, Carter is the first black woman to ever win in the Costume Design category. Carter had worked on previous films “Selma,” “Malcolm X,”  and “Love & Basketball.”

“Marvel may have created the first black superhero, but through costume design we turned him into an African king,” Carter said after taking the Oscar. “Thank you for honoring African royalty and the empowered way women can look and lead on screen.”

Next, Production Designer Hannah Beachler and Set Decorator Jay Hart took the award for Best Production Design in a Motion Picture. Beachler is the first black artist to ever win the Production Design award and is also the first black artist nominated in the category’s 90-year existence. She previously worked on “Creed” and Beyoncé’s “Lemonade.” 

The third Oscar was awarded to composer Ludwig Goransson for Best Score in a Motion Picture. Goransson met Black Panther director Ryan Coogler while attending the University of Southern California.  The two worked together previously on “Fruitvale Station” and “Creed.”

“Ryan, working with you has been an incredible honor,” Goransson said after accepting the Oscar. “I remember 12 years ago we were sitting in our dorm at USC writing the score for your first short film, and we’re here 12 years later celebrating one of the most important cinematic moments in history.”
