Minnie Van drivers at Disney World can join a union

The Minnie Van drivers who work at Walt Disney World are eligible to join the Teamsters union, an official with the National Labor Relations Board ruled last week.

About 60 Disney cast members drive resort guests around the Walt Disney World Resort and to Orlando International Airport in the polka-dotted Minnie Vans. The service is done through the Lyft app.

Disney argued the “Lyft drivers” couldn’t be “covered by a union since the Teamsters waived their right to represent any workers not mentioned in its five-year contract,” according to an Associated Press story.

An NLRB regional director said since the Lyft jobs did not exist when the contract was signed the waiver did not apply. The director likened the van drivers to other transportation workers already represented by the Teamsters such as the bus drivers, AP reported.
