Disney scores 15 Oscar nominations
Fans may have been hoping for a better showing when this year’s Oscar nominations were announced this morning — especially for Best Picture long-shots “Inside Out” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Still, Disney racked up the second-most Oscar nominations among studios in this year’s race.
The studio had 15 nominations total for four feature films and one animated short — a distant second to 20th Century Fox, which had 26 nominations among four films. Six of those nods were shared between the two studios, which shared distribution of “Bridge of Spies.”
“Inside Out,” which had been seen as a deserving long-shot in the Best Picture category, had to settle for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Screenplay nominations. “Inside Out” is one of only two movies in the Animated Feature category that anyone has seen; the other popular release on the list is the “Shaun the Sheep Movie.” Neither Pixar’s “The Good Dinosaur” nor Universal’s “Minions” made the cut. (The other nominees, for the record, are “Anomalisa,” “Boy and the World,” “When Marnie Was There.”)
Fans who were hoping for a better showing for the new “Star Wars” movie, but it was relegated to “below-the-line” categories. The most notable nomination for Star Wars: 83-year-old John Williams scored his 50th Oscar nod, for original score. He has won five times — for “Fiddler on the Roof” (1971), “Jaws” (1975), “Star Wars: A New Hope” (1977), “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (1982), and “Schindler’s List” (1993).
