Lovebugs are out in force, and we’re not talking Herbie
If you are visiting Walt Disney World and feel you are walking into bugs everywhere, chances are you are. Lovebug season is out in force in Florida.
Now, first off, don’t worry. Lovebugs don’t bite or sting. They don’t carry any infectious diseases. They are just a major annoyance and cause people to wash their cars more often to get rid of the windshield splatter.
Lovebug populations generally peak in May and September for a period of four to five weeks.
Adult lovebugs often feed on the nectar of flowering plants. When they reach maturity the lovebug spends almost the entirety of its life reproducing with its mate, thus the name “lovebug.” The male and female lovebug attach to each other and fly around while mating.
After the female lays her eggs, the make will die first and then the female.
While annoying, lovebugs are actually beneficial as larvae because they help to decompose dead plant material.
