Walt Disney Railroad will have modified route during Frontierland construction
Once the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer’s Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat cease operation on July 7, the Walt Disney World Railroad will start operating on a modified route.
The route will exclude the Frontierland station starting July 7. The train will operate as a shuttle between Main Street station and Fantasyland station only.
Once the Rivers of America is drained and filled, it will be transformed into Piston Peak National Park. The new Car-themed land will draw inspiration from the Rocky Mountain area and the grandeur of American national parks, promising an awe-inspiring wilderness complete with towering trees, snowcapped mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, roaring rivers, and impressive geysers.
This isn’t the first time the railroad has undergone some changes due to construction. The last time construction took place at Magic Kingdom, the railroad was closed for four years. The train was closed for the construction of TRON. The tracks needed to be moved to accommodate the new attraction. In addition, Disney refreshed the 1.5-mile scenic track looping the park, performed maintenance on all of the vintage steam trains, and updated the narration. Four vintage narrow-gauge steam trains originally built between 1916 and 1928 take passengers around the park.
I expect the modified route to be in place for at least a few years. No opening date or year has been announced for the Cars-themed land, but even after that, we can expect the new Villains land to open beyond Big Thunder Mountain, and that could mean even more changes to the track.
