A history of Disney balloons at Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

Since 1927, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has been enchanting audiences with its iconic balloon spectacle. Among the beloved characters that have taken to the skies are many from the magical world of Disney.

It all began in 1934 when Mickey Mouse, the iconic symbol of Disney, soared above the crowds. This marked the debut of Disney balloons in the parade, a tradition that continues to captivate audiences to this day. Over the years, a host of Disney characters have joined the parade, including beloved figures like Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto, and the mischievous Chip ‘n’ Dale.

More recently, Disney has introduced newer characters to the parade, such as Buzz Lightyear, Woody, and the lovable monsters from “Monsters, Inc.” These characters have brought a fresh and exciting energy to the parade, delighting both children and adults alike.

This year’s  parade — which airs 8:30 a.m. on NBC on Thanksgiving Day —will feature more than 5,000 volunteers, 17 featured character balloons, 22 floats, 15 heritage and novelty balloons, more than 700 clowns, 11 marching bands, 10 performance groups and music’s biggest stars, all welcoming Santa Claus and the holidays.

Two new Disney balloons – Minnie Mouse and Marvel’s Spider-Man – debut at Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
