Soon Star Wars fans will be able to design a lightsaber — at home

If you’re one of the many people making fun of the crossguard lightsaber from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” you’ll soon have the chance to prove you can do better.
This fall, Hasbro will introduce Star Wars Bladebuilders, a kit that will let you — or your kids — make the wackiest lightsaber you can imagine. Or the most fiercely practical, if that’s more your style.
You can switch out hilts, add connectors to use multiple blades or even a try a foam “blade” instead of the expandable plastic type. The new line was detailed this week in USA Today and will be on display at New York City’s Toy Fair this weekend.
“Star Wars is such a magical property and in particular the lightsaber is — and I think everyone would agree — the most iconic weapon of all time,” Kim Boyd, Hasbro’s senior director for the Star Wars brand, told USA Today. “This is the first time we’ve given kids the chance to customise through an entire system.”

The pieces come in several kits, which USA Today detailed:
- Jedi Master Lightsaber set, $49.99: Includes a lightsaber with lights and electronic sounds, a pair of light daggers, an expansion hilt and a variety of connectors.
- Electronic lightsaber, $19.99: Comes in Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth VAder and Luke Skywalker styles.
- Foam lightsaber, $14.99: Comes in Yoda, Vader and Luke variants (you can pick them out at the bottom of the photo below)
- Extend lightsaber, $9.99: Includes Luke, Vader and Anakin Skywalker styles.
