What is Project 89 at Walt Disney World?

Disney World has filed new permits for something called Project 89 at the site of the old River Country near Fort Wilderness.

The new permits filed with Southwest Florida Management System for soil boring tests. These tests determine what the soil is like in the area where construction is planned. Just what will go there, is unknown.

The location is interesting. It is the site of River Country, Disney World’s first water park. The park is located near Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground and operated from 1976 until 2001. It wasn’t until 2005 that Disney officials said the park would not re-open.

Now, the fun speculation begins. Could this mean the rebuilding of another water park? A new wildlife exhibit area, similar to when Discovery Island was in operation across the way?  Or, could it be another Disney Vacation Club resort? Last year DVCinfo.com put together an interesting story on “Four DVC resorts that might have been” and mentions one at Fort Wilderness.

Take a look at the area highlighted below in the permit and then video. Too much of a coincidence?
