Miranda, Blunt to star in Mary Poppins sequel due out in December 2018

Hamilton’s  Lin-Manuel Miranda and Emily Blunt and will star in “Mary Poppins Returns,” a sequel to the Disney classic “Mary Poppins.”

The movie will be released on Dec. 25, 2018, Disney announced.
Blunt, who appeared in “Into the Woods,” will play Mary Poppins, a role originated by Julie Andrews in the 1964 movie.
Miranda, from the blockbuster Broadway show “Hamilton,” will play a new character street lamplighter named Jack.
Rob Marshall, who directed “Into the Woods,” will direct this movie with a screenplay by  David Magee based on The Mary Poppins Stories by P.L. Travers. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman will be writing original songs.
The story, according to a Disney press release, takes place in Depression-era London and follows a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the Mary Poppins following a personal loss.
 The material is drawn from the seven additional books about Mary Poppins adventures author P.L. Travers published between 1935 and 1988.
“The iconic original film means so much to me personally, and I look forward to creating an original movie musical that can bring Mary Poppins, and her message that childlike wonder can be found in even the most challenging of times, to a whole new generation,” Marshall said in the release.
