Yes, Virginia, there will be a 2020 Disney Parks Christmas Day special
ABC has announced its holiday programming this year and even as COVID-19 has cut back entertainment choices at Disney Parks around the world, and with Disneyland still closed, there will be a 2020 Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Celebration.
The announcement by ABC was short with just the following description – “Disney’s annual Christmas celebration airs Christmas morning on ABC and features heartwarming stories and amazing celebrity performances.”
Normally, Disneyland and Walt Disney World are used as the major backdrops to tape performances of singers and bands who appear on the special. But Disneyland is closed and any taping at Disney World would probably need to take place late at night after the Magic Kingdom closed.
It is also a time for Disney to tout its newest attractions, upcoming attractions and feature films. But COVID-19 has disrupted many project timetables.
Considering the two-hour special normally acts as one long commercial for a Disney Parks vacation, it will be interesting to see how Disney handles this special. Disney has not provided any additional information about the show.
But, let’s remember, ABC has done well in altering its programming during the coronavirus pandemic – remember, the NFL Draft and the Disney Sing-along specials – this could be an opportunity to try something different. Wouldn’t it be magical to see the Candlelight Processional or other holiday entertainment from previous years that have normally been in the parks, but will not appear this year.
The special will air Dec. 25, 2020, from 10 a.m. to noon.
