Disney will blow up the ‘Disney Vault’ for new Disney + service

For years Disney placed its films in the “Disney Vault,” releasing them every few years back into movie theaters, on VHS on DVD and during special anniversaries. That vault will now be open for good, according to Walt Disney Co. CEO. Bob Iger.

The new Disney + streaming service that is expected to debut later this year will contain the complete Disney movie library.

“At some point after launch, fairly soon, it will house the entire Disney motion picture Library. So, the movies that you speak of that have traditionally been kept in a vault and have been brought out basically every few years will be on the service,” Iger said.

The “Disney Vault” is the term used by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment for its policy of putting home video releases of Walt Disney Animation Studios’s animated features on moratorium. This also means digital copies are not available on DisneyMovies Anywhere when those movies are currently in the Disney Vault.

This announcement is big news. It means that if you want to see the “Pinocchio, “The Aristocats” or any other animated film, you won’t have to wait for it to be re-released. You will be able to watch on purely on demand.
