‘Finding Dory’ breaks box office records during opening weekend

“Find Dory” swam to the top of the box office this past weekend breaking the record for the largest single day and opening day for an animated film with an opening day totaling $54.9 million.

In addition, Disney-Pixar release “takes the global box office hook, line and sinker with $50 million in the international territories and nearly $190 million globally this weekend as the forgetful fish draws audiences around the world looking for a family-friendly time at the movie theater,” according to comScore’s Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

The sequel was a huge increased over “Find Nemo’s” opening back in 2003 with a $70.2 million.

The movie has Ellen DeGeneres return as the voice of Dory, the blue tang fish with short term memory loss. The movie is supposed to take place six months after what happened in “Finding Nemo” when Dory recalls some childhood memories. She is then on a quest to find her family with with Marlin, voice by Albert Brooks and Nemo, voiced by Hayden Rolence, in tow.

Along the way they meet a new group of characters, including Bailey, a white beluga whale voiced by Ty Burrel, Destiny, a whale shark voiced by Kailtin Olsen, and Hank, an octopus, voiced by Ed O’Neill.

And the talker from the movie, is also the short in front of the movie “Piper.”
