Disney Facts: Walt Disney’s speech via Morse Code

At the New Orleans Square railroad station in Disneyland, the rhythmic tapping from the Telegraph Cable Office is a subtle yet significant detail. For years, this tapping has played a special message, believed to be a portion of Walt Disney’s inaugural speech from the park’s opening in 1955. However, the message was a little garbled until a sharp-eared ham radio operator, George Eldridge, deciphered the code and helped correct it.

Eldridge, an annual passholder who lived near the park, had always been fascinated by the sounds of Disneyland. He knew the tapping was meant to be Walt Disney’s iconic welcome, but something about its repetition every 49 seconds struck him as odd. As he noted in an October 2020 article for QST Amateur Radio magazine, even at 25 words per minute, 49 seconds would only allow for about 20 words – too short for a complete speech.

Curiosity piqued, Eldridge brought a tape recorder to the park to capture the sound in September 1997. Playing the recording back slowly, he realized the Morse code wasn’t standard. This led him to research and ultimately discover the Continental Code, a variant distinct from the more common International Morse. To fully analyze the intricate waveform, Eldridge digitized the audio.

His initial decoding revealed a message that was close, but not quite right: “WHO COME TO DISNEYLAND, WELCOME. HERE AGE RELIVES FOND MEMORIES OF THE PAST, AND HERE YOUTH MAY SAVOR THE CHALL.” The message repeated with an awkward splice, creating ambiguity at the beginning and end.

Eldridge’s detective work led him to Glenn Barker, a media engineer at WED Studios in Burbank. Barker, committed to preserving the park’s historical accuracy, suspected the issue likely stemmed from the message’s transition from an endless loop tape player to a solid-state digital player.

With Barker’s help, the original tape containing Walt’s dedication was found. Eldridge meticulously decoded it, finally arranging the code into its proper sequence. The corrected and now crystal-clear message, which plays today at the Telegraph Cable Office, truly captures Walt Disney’s vision:

“TO ALL WHO COME TO DISNEYLAND, WELCOME. HERE AGE RELIVES FOND MEMORIES OF THE PAST, AND HERE YOUTH MAY SAVOR THE CHALLENGE AND PROMISE OF THE FUTURE.”
