Jason Simpson and Giovanna Martins set records at Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon
Olympic medalist Jenny Simpson took second place among women in the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon at Disney World on Nov. 6, and her husband, Jason, shattered the record in 13.1-mile race as the couple visited Disney World during a family vacation.
An estimated 14,000 runners participated in half marathon and raced through Animal Kingdom and Epcot. For the first time in race history, the half marathon race took place during morning hours.
“I worked my tail off to make this all happen,’’ Simpson said in a statement released by Disney. She coordinated the family trip from her home in Boulder, Colo.
“Winning the bronze medal (in the 1,500 meters in Rio this summer) was great, but this is really, really amazing. It was just so much fun to be in the environment where I grew up here in Orlando and at Disney and especially being around all of the (Disney) characters and my friends. It was a lot of fun.’’
Simpson was using the race as a training run as early preparation for the World Championships next summer,.
Jason Simpson posted a time of 1:10:24 – more than a minute quicker than the previous mark of 1:11:47.
