Disney to make major change on Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland and Disney World

The “We wants the Redhead” chant on Pirates of the Caribbean ride will take on a whole new meaning in 2018.

Disney has announced that the famous redhead in the scene where pirates are auctioning off women will get a new role. Instead of the drunken pirates yelling to put her on the auction block, she will be one of the pirates, the Disney Parks Blog announced.

The audio-animatronic character will be “joining the pirates ranks and helping the local townspeople ‘unload’ their valuables at the Mercado auction,” Disney Parks reported.

The changes will take place in 2018 at both Disneyland and Disney World when the attraction will undergo refurbishment.

The scene in which the redhead is auctioned off is one of the original scenes created when the attraction opened in Disneyland in 1967. The phrase “We wants the Redhead” has adorned t-shirts and other souvenirs over the years.

The ride has undergone numerous changes over the years. This is not the first time Disney has updated the ride when it comes to how women are treated. In the original attraction there was a scene in which pirates, who were raiding the town were chasing women in circles. In 1997, the Magic Kingdom version change to have the women chasing the pirates in an attempt to get them out of the town.

The previous change launched a backlash from some guests who did not want the original version changed. But the attraction has been altered and updated numerous times over the past years, adding the characters from the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series.
