Disney Springs now closing at 7 p.m. due to Orange County curfew

Disney Springs, which just recently reopened, will now be closing at 7 p.m. to comply with Orange County’s 10 p.m. curfew, effective today, Sunday, May 31 and until further notice.

Disney is closing early to allow cast members, operating participant employees and guests time to return home, Disney announced.

The curfew was imposed in Orlando and Orange County after violence and looting erupted from protests in response to the killing of George Floyd.

During a Sunday afternoon news briefing held by county and city leaders, as well as local law enforcement officials, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings announced that as a result of the protests, a curfew would be put in place for the county.

“Because of some things that have happened within the last 24 hours, where we saw some destruction of some properties, I am compelled to announce that we will be enacting a curfew in unincorporated Orange County,” Demings said.

In a press release, Demings said:

As the first African-American elected Mayor of Orange County, I want to acknowledge we have a systemic problem with racism in America. It is my solemn commitment to work with community leaders in addressing it.

I support and applaud peaceful and thoughtful protests.  However, we cannot as a civilized society accept violence and destruction of property as a solution. The call to action for protests must be done in a nonviolent manner with a healthy respect for the rule of law.

I stand with law enforcement leaders who have called for change and are against the unjustified use of force. We must be unified and have a respect for one another, especially during this time of a pandemic.

As a former police chief and sheriff, lawlessness is not the answer. I will be working with local leaders, clergy and law enforcement to develop long and short-term strategies to address the myriad of issues facing our society.
