Disney+ launching in India on April 3
Disney Plus will now be launching in India starting April 3 via the Hotstar streaming service.
When Disney Plus has launched in other international markets it was as an independent service, but since Hotstar is also owned by Disney and has 300 million monthly active users, Hotstar will be upgraded to Disney+Hotstar. The Disney Plus content will only be available to paid subscribers, according to The Economic Times.
The service will be available in two price tiers. Disney Plus VIP subscribers get access to the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, Bollywood films, Hotstar originals, unlimited live sports and Star TV serials for INR 399 ($5.30) a year. For INR 1499 ($19.90) annually, Disney Plus Premium subscribers will get all the programming available to VIP subscribers, and in addition, will have access to 29 Disney Plus originals, including “The Mandalorian,” and the latest U.S. shows from HBO, Showtime and Fox.
Disney has slowly been rolling out the service around the world. Here is the timeline of when different markets have gone online and when others are expected to go online:
Nov. 12, 2019: U.S., Canada and Netherlands launch.
Nov. 19, 2019: Australia and New Zealand launch.
March 24, 2020: UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Switzerland launch.
April 3, 2020: India scheduled.
April 7, 2020: France scheduled.
Summer 2020: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden as well as Greenland scheduled.
First half of 2021: Eastern European countries, some Latin American countries scheduled.
2021: Asia and Pacific countries scheduled.
