Make your own magic: A morning meditation

Today, take out your favorite Disney mug and start your day with a meditation over your morning coffee.

We wrote previously about the power of mindful meditation, which has been shown to help manage stress and reduce anxiety. And who among us doesn’t need some of that right now? You don’t have to clear your mind of everything — just focus on what you’re doing in the moment.

Start by feeling the mug in your hand — notice its weight and texture, feel how it fits in your hand. Is the character in raised relief or is the surface smooth? Is it cool against your hand as you take it out of the cupboard?

Be aware of the process of making your coffee, including how your foot hits the floor as you walk to the coffee maker (is it cool tile, or warm wood?). Listen to the sounds of the coffee brewing, and appreciate the smell. Notice the color of the liquid as you pour it. What does it sound like as it fills the mug? Notice the steam curling from the mug.

If you add creamer, notice the swirling pattern it makes as it slowly mixes with the dark coffee. Sugar? See the individual grains as you add them to your cup.

As you sit with your coffee, reflect on why this is your favorite mug. What is meaningful about it? Was it a gift? A memento of a family trip? Is the character meaningful to you in a special way? Why?

Observe the moment you’re in and let judgments pass you by. If you notice a dirty dish on the counter, let it go without worry. You can take care of it later. If you get distracted, that’s ok, just bring your attention back to the mug in your hands.

This may be only five minutes at the start of the day, but it can center you for the craziness to come.

For extra relaxation, try ending your day with a meditation over a nice glass of wine or a strong quarantini. You’ve earned it!
