12 fun facts about The Great Movie Ride at Disney World slated to close on Aug. 13

The Great Movie Ride at Hollywood Studios in Disney World is going to call it a wrap on Aug. 13, 2017.

The ride has been the centerpiece of the park for the past 28 years and 3 months. The attraction sparked the idea for a third theme park at Disney World.

The ride itself stands inside a replica of legendary Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, complete with neon marquees and an art-deco interior. Props from over 20 movies have been displayed at one time or another since is opening.

The space will make way for a new movie ride. This one is called Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway. It will take guests on a journey inside the Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts.

But let’s first say so long to The Great Movie Ride with 12 must-know facts about the attraction:

1. The Great Movie Ride debuted along with what was then called Disney-MGM Studios on May 1, 1989.

2 .The attraction was developed under the name Great Moments Movie Museum.

3 .The Great Movie Ride was originally supposed to be the main attraction in a movie business pavilion in Epcot.

4. The attraction takes guests on an 18-minute tour of some of the most famous films in 1930s-era Hollywood up to Alien, including “The Wizard of Oz” and “Mary Poppins.”

5 .The ride is housed in a full-scale reproduction of Hollywood’s legendary Graumann’s Chinese Theater.

6. The space of the ride is about 95,000 square feet.

7. Guests can find about 100 hand prints, footprints and signatures of some of Disney’s greatest stars embedded in the cement located outside of the ride. And they are all real.

8. The ride features over 50 lifelike audio-animatronics replicas of legendary movie stars.

9. When the attraction first opened only men played the role of gangsters in the Gangster scene and only women played the role of the bandits in the Western scene.

10. The names that read out of the computer in the Alien scene are those of the Imagineers that worked on building the attraction.

11.The hieroglyphics in the Indiana Jones scene features Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.

12 .There are 12 movies featured in the ride itself: “Footlight Parade,” “Singin’ in the Rain,” “Mary Poppins,” “The Public Enemy,” “A Fistful of Dollars,” “The Searchers,” “Alien,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Tarzan the Ape Man,” “Casablanca,” “Fantasia” and “The Wizard of Oz.”
