Everything new for Disney+ announced at D23 Expo 2019
We’re getting really excited for Disney+, especially after today’s D23 panel discussion. But what got us most jazzed?
Was it the first trailer for “The Mandalorian”? Was it confirmation of an Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor? Or was it word of three more Marvel Studios series in development?
As it launched subscription sales for the streaming service at the D23 Expo, Disney+ brought out a parade of stars to share details of its lineup of original series and movies and share six new titles in development. It was the first showcase for Disney+ at a D23 Expo, and they made the most of their 90 minutes.
Highlights
Disney+ announced six new titles today:
- It confirmed the rumor that Ewan McGregor will return as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a new Lucasfilm series. Shooting will begin in 2020. The story takes place eight years after the events of “Revenge of the Sith” and finds Obi-Wan on Tatooine watching over Luke.
- Three more Marvel Studios live-action series will join an already-robust slate of Marvel titles: “Ms. Marvel,” “Moon Knight” and “She-Hulk.” The three new titles join four other Marvel shows already in development: “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “Loki,” “WandaVision” and “What if…?”
- Hilary Duff will return to reprise the role of Lizzie McGuire. In the sequel to the 2001 Disney Channel series, Lizzie is now a 30-year-old millennial living in New York City. The familiar animated version of a young Lizzie will offer up commentary on 30-year-old Lizzie is really thinking.
- The Muppets will star in an “unscripted” short-form variety series, “Muppets Now.” Hopefully Disney+ can recapture the magic of “The Muppet Show,” which also featured a celebrity guest in each episode.
First looks
Disney+ also shared the first trailers for several of the titles that will be available at launch:
“The Mandalorian” is a highly anticipated live-action series from Lucasfilm, which follows a “lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.”
Anna Kendrick and Billy Eichner star in the Christmas film “Noelle.” It’s Anna Kendrick, how could we not share the trailer?
The canine stars of “Lady and the Tramp” have gotten a lot of attention this week, especially the scruffy shelter dog cast as Tramp.
A subscription to Disney+ will cost $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year. Among the features of a subscription:
- Unlimited downloads
- Commercial-free viewing
- Concurrent streaming on up to four devices
