‘Maleficent’ becomes Angelina Jolie’s biggest hit
“Maleficent” crossed the $500 million mark at theaters worldwide last weekend, becoming the top-earning film for star Angelina Jolie.
In its fourth week in release in the United States, the retelling of the Sleeping Beauty tale grossed $13 million, for a total domestic take of $186 million.
Jolie’s previous high mark was “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” in which she starred with Brad Pitt in 2005. That movie earned $478.2 million.
By comparison, “Frozen” passed the $1 billion mark in March, and Disney’s highest-grossing movie of all time, “Marvel’s The Avengers,” made $1.5 billion.
Expect the worldwide gross for “Maleficent” to go higher: The movie has yet to open in Japan.
