Tomorrowland Speedway closure date announced to allow Tron coaster work

The Tomorrowland Speedway in the Magic Kingdom will close for refurbishment starting Jan. 2, 2019, so work can commence for the new Tron ride coming to Walt Disney World.

Work has been taking place behind Space Mountain for the construction of the new Tron-themed coaster-style attraction that will allow riders to board a train of two-wheeled Lightcycles for a race through the digital frontier.

Now it’s time for the building to be constructed and to do that part of the Tomorrowland Speedway track needs to be adjusted.

Disney previously said that the Tomorrowland Speedway is expected to reopen in summer 2019.

In addition to the speedway, the Walt Disney World Railroad will also need to close down so track work can also take place. There has been no announcement yet on when the railroad will close.

The Tron attraction is scheduled to debut in time for Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary in 2021.
