6 things we learned from the new Captain Marvel trailer

Marvel’s Captain Marvel trailer dropped today giving us a first look at Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, who is anticipated to be the savior for the next Marvel Avengers movie.

Remember, at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, we saw Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) send a message to Captain Marvel.

“Captain Marvel,” due out in March 2019, gives us a glimpse at who this hero is and how she fits into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The trailer is below and below that are the six things we learned about the characters, the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

1. I miss Blockbuster. (I already digress.) The crash outside the  Blockbuster immediately gives us the time frame of the movie – the 1990s. I was a simpler time, before Ed Norton was turned into the Hulk, Tony Stark became Iron Man and Captain America was still frozen in ice. It was a time where you could rent three movies for nights for $9.99 (did you see the sign). It was a time with no smartphones, where a pager clipped to your belt was a status symbol. After all, that meant someone wanted to get a hold of you. So I’ll be kind and continue the rewind of the trailer.

2. Carol Danvers, aka, Captain Marvel, has some amnesia. She tells Nick Fury she keeps having memories of “a life here” on Earth. We get glimpses of her past growing up on Earth, so there is a mystery of what exactly happened to her.

3. Captain Marvel is not supposed to be back on Earth. Nick Fury in the trailer says “I know a renegade soldier when I see one.” Has the member of the elite military Starforce from the Kree planet of Hala decide to go AWOL. Or was she in a battle that propelled her ship to Earth?

4. Nick Fury is now the low man at S.H.I.E.L.D. and we assume the Captain Marvel incident raises his profile. It also shows why Fury felt the need to assemble the Avengers, he knew there were aliens out there and just waiting for them to come back.

5. Coulson lives! In addition, to Fury, who has both eyes in this story, we get to see Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) who dies in the first Avengers movie and Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) form “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

6. Skrulls. We finally get look at one of the other big baddies in the Marvel universe. The Skrulls are shape-shifters, notice Captain Marvel slugging the old lady on the train, she was a Skrull. I mean, I doubt she hit the woman because she could not provide proof of fare payment for the train as the sign behind Captain Marvel states. The introduction of the Skrulls can help propel the MCU for another 10 years. As we see the Skrull on the beach, is this an invasion, or just a scouting party for something to come after the last Avengers movies scheduled for next year? Marvel is introducing a lot of past plot lines that can wind its way into future movies.
