Epcot lagoon getting a $1.8 million upgrade. Is a new show coming?
Update: A story about a new show has been posted here.
The Epcot lagoon, which is home to the nighttime show Illuminations: Reflections of Earth, is getting an upgrade. Could this be the first step in a new show coming to this Disney World theme park?
The Reedy Creek Improvement District set a preliminary budget of $1.8 million for electrical upgrades at the World Showcase Lagoon at Epcot. It also approved $325,000 to buy materials and set aside $220,000 for engineering and construction inspection, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
Reedy Creek is Disney’s government and provides typical services you might find in a town such as roads and utilities.
No more specifics were released by Reedy Creek or Disney, but there have been rumors about replacing the current show.
Illuminations: Reflections of Earth has been showing in the World Showcase since September 1999. Originally created for the Millenial Celebration, the show was so successful Disney kept it going. But it is getting long in the tooth.
The show uses fireworks, water fountains, fire effects, lasers and searchlights, but the technology and ability to project on the water fountains and mapping on objects has improved tremendously during the past 18 years. And, there is always the possibility of using drones for a light show, as Disney demonstrated at Disney Springs a few years ago during the holidays.
So the possibilities are endless. Imagine projection mapping on the buildings of the World Showcase behind you as drones fly to the center of the lagoon for a show above, with new fireworks and water fountains for projections.
Are we in for another surprise for the Disney World’s 50th anniversary in 2021?
