Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny shared the screen 30 years ago
It’s been 30 years since four of the most iconic animated characters appeared on the silver screen together.
In “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny appeared together for the first and only time on screen. In addition, Donald Duck and Daffy Duck worked together for the first and only time in the movie that was released on June 22, 1988.
Getting these superstars together was a lot tougher than one would suspect. Disney’s Touchstone Pictures produced the film and they needed to go into high-level negotiations to get the Disney and Looney Tunes characters to appear together.
Warner Bros. would only allow Bugs and Daffy to appear if they received equal screen time with Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.
As you watch the film, you’ll notice both Mickey and Bugs appear in every frame together as they skydive. The entire length of the scene is about 35 seconds.
In addition, neither of the characters refer to each other by their full name. Bugs Bunny only refers to Mickey Mouse as “Doc.” And Mickey only calls him “Bugs.”
Donald Duck and Daffy Duck (no relation) share a scene on stage performing together. After all, what could happen when you put two ducks with anger management issues together? A piano duel that gets really messy.
The movie which received four Academy Awards for Best Film Editing, Best Sound Effects Editing, Best Visual Effects, and a Special Achievement Award in Animation Direction, is directed by Robert Zemeckis, stars Bob Hoskins, Christopher Lloyd, Joanna Cassidy and Charles Fleischer as Roger Rabbit.
