Video: Behind the scenes look at Guardians of the Galaxy coaster construction

The foundation for the what will be one of the longest enclosed coasters ever created, the Guardians of the Galaxy attraction at Epcot, has been poured.

Earlier this week, 960 trucks’ worth of concrete was poured to create the foundation, according to a video released by Disney. To house this attraction a second building needed to be built adjacent to the current Universe of Energy building.

In addition, the construction walls that surround the Universe of Energy Pavilion at Epcot feature an outer space backdrop in a Guardians of the Galaxy style font informing guests that “A Whole New Galaxy is coming to Epcot”.

The 9,260 cubic yards of concrete was used to pour the new 71,950 square foot foundation. That’s the size of three Olympic swimming pools. It took 17 hours, over 300 workers and 80.4 miles of rebar to do the pour.

The story behind the attraction has not been revealed, but the Disney Parks Blog says the storyline is being developed by Walt Disney Imagineering in collaboration with the original filmmakers. The ride is set to open in time for Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary in 2021. Below is the video of the construction pour.
