2 female Grevy’s zebra foals born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Two female Grevy’s zebra foals were born at Animal Kingdom in the Walt Disney World Resort this past week.
The first foal was born April 26, 2018, to Layee, and the second was born May 1 to Zuri, according to the Disney Parks Blog.
The two foals are nursing and bonding backstage with their mom. The will soon join the heard on the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail overlook.
The Grevy’s zebras are the most endangered species of zebra. There are about 2,500 of these zebras in the world. They historically inhabited the plains of Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and Kenya in East Africa. But their population has been cut in half in the last three decades and they now primarily are in Southern Ethiopia and Northern Kenya.

- The zebra was named after Jules Grévy, then president of France
- The Grevy’s zebra is the largest of all wild equines standing 8 to 9 feet from head to tail with a tail that is 22 to 30 inches long.
- These zebras weigh 770 to 990 pounds.
- The Grevey’s zebra has a large, long, and narrow head with elongated nostril openings.
- Juveniles have a mane that extends to the length of the back and shortens as they reach adulthood.
