Babies: Red River Hog Triplets Born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge
The spring season is here, which also means it’s baby season Disney World has officially announced the birth of red river hog triplets at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.
The three newcomers are currently bonding with their mother in a dedicated backstage habitat, where the resort’s animal care team is closely monitoring their growth and development. These piglets are easy to identify thanks to their unique “watermelon” coat pattern—a series of yellow stripes and spots that provide natural camouflage in the wild.
After the babies and mom are comfortable, they will make their debut on the savanna at the lodge. Remember, the Animal Kingdom Lodge resort has its own savanna and animals, separate from the Animal Kingdom theme park.

Fast Facts About the New Triplets
- The “Watermelon” Look: Their distinctive baby stripes are temporary and will eventually fade into the vibrant reddish-brown coat and white facial markings seen on adults.
- Natural Navigators: Red river hogs are known as “forest hogs” and are excellent swimmers. In the wild, they often use their snout to root for food along riverbanks and in marshy areas.
- A Growing Sounder: Red river hogs are highly social animals that live in family groups known as “sounders,” led by a dominant male.
In March at the Animal Kingdom Lodge, Winnie, one of the resident Ankole cattle, gave birth to a healthy female calf.
