EPCOT’s Frozen Ever After Debuts Realistic New Animatronics

Disney World has released the first official images of the newly Frozen Ever After updated Audio-Animatronics, showcasing a massive technological leap for the attraction.

While the ride is scheduled to officially reopen to the public tomorrow, Feb. 12, the reveal marks the end of a highly anticipated refurbishment aimed at bringing the 2016 attraction into the modern era of Disney Imagineering.

The most significant change is the departure from the “rear-projection” facial technology that has been a hallmark—and a point of debate—since the ride first opened.

The updated Anna, Elsa, and Kristoff figures now feature:

  • Silicone Skin & Sculpted Faces: Replacing the internal video projections, the new heads utilize a silicone mold that offers a lifelike, tactile appearance.
  • Articulated Movement: These next-generation heads feature physical eyes and mouths that move with precision, matching the fluid animation styles recently debuted at World of Frozen in Hong Kong Disneyland and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.
  • Structural Refinement: To accommodate the advanced tech, Imagineers had to physically modify the “necks” of the original animatronic frames to support the new, heavier articulated heads.

This transformation was inspired by recent global advancements in Disney’s robotics, specifically those showcased in the international parks. By moving away from digital screen faces and toward physical, articulated features, Disney has elevated the storytelling experience to be more immersive and consistent with the characters’ appearances on the silver screen.

The three-week refurbishment wasn’t just about the faces. Beyond the royal family, the attraction’s infrastructure received a comprehensive overhaul. Engineers utilized the downtime to upgrade the ride’s show control system and refine the show lighting to better highlight the new figures. Teams also worked behind the scenes to “touch up” various scenic elements throughout the journey, ensuring that every corner of Arendelle feels fresh for the reopening.
