Disney, OpenAI forge historic partnership to unleash fan creativity with Sora AI
In a landmark agreement that promises to transform fan engagement and digital storytelling, The Walt Disney Company has entered into a three-year licensing partnership with OpenAI, integrating its vast library of iconic characters into the generative AI video platform, Sora.
This collaboration positions Disney as the first major content licensing partner for OpenAI’s technology, signaling a massive leap forward in creative collaboration between Hollywood and Silicon Valley. This deal comes the same day that Disney sent a cease-and-desist letter to Google, accusing them of using Disney’s copyrighted works to train its AI models.Â
“Google has deeply embedded its infringing video and image AI Services into its broad family of products and services actively used by over a billion people. This multiplies the scope of Google’s infringement, and harm to Disney’s intellectual property, not to mention the ill-gotten benefits Google enjoys from its unauthorized exploitation of Disney’s copyrighted works,” according to the letter.
Earlier this year Disney sued Character.AI for IP infringement and has teamed with Warner Bros. Discovery and Universal to sue MiniMax, a Chinese startup for IP infringement.
Under the terms of OpenAI deal, which includes a substantial $1 billion equity investment from Disney in OpenAI, fans will soon gain the unprecedented ability to generate their own short, user-prompted social videos featuring characters from the worlds of Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars. This capability, expected to roll out in early 2026, will draw from a set of over 200 animated, masked, and creature characters, along with their associated costumes, vehicles, props, and iconic environments. This means users will be able to command Sora to create unique scenes, such as seeing Mickey Mouse piloting a Star Wars speeder or watching a new short story involving Loki and characters from Frozen. The agreement explicitly safeguards against the use of any talent likenesses or voices, focusing strictly on the intellectual property of the animated and illustrated characters.

Furthermore, the partnership extends the creative reach of OpenAI’s tools. ChatGPT Images will also be licensed to generate fully realized images of these licensed characters in seconds, all from simple text commands. As part of the agreement, a curated selection of these unique, fan-inspired Sora videos will be made available for streaming on Disney+, adding a new dimension to content consumption on the platform.
The collaboration goes beyond licensing; Disney is simultaneously becoming a major customer of OpenAI, committing to use its APIs to build new products, tools, and immersive experiences—including enhancements for the Disney+ subscriber experience. ChatGPT will also be deployed internally for use by Disney employees, streamlining creative and corporate processes.
Leadership from both companies emphasized a shared commitment to responsible innovation. Robert A. Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, noted that the partnership will “thoughtfully and responsibly extend the reach of our storytelling through generative AI, while respecting and protecting creators and their works.” Similarly, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman affirmed that the agreement “shows how AI companies and creative leaders can work together responsibly to promote innovation that benefits society, respect the importance of creativity, and help works reach vast new audiences.” Both entities have committed to maintaining robust controls to prevent the generation of harmful content, respect the rights of content owners, and protect individual voice and likeness—ensuring that this new era of storytelling remains ethical and secure.
