Boneyard at Animal Kingdom closing to make way for Tropical Americas

Dinosaur lovers and young paleontologists, mark your calendars: The Boneyard, the beloved dinosaur-themed play area at Animal Kingdom, is set to close permanently after Sept. 1, 2025. The closure paves the way for the ongoing Tropical Americas expansion, a transformative project that will reshape Dinoland U.S.A. into an immersive new land inspired by the vibrant cultures and natural wonders of Central and South America.

Guests eager for one last adventure in the interactive dig site and climbing structure will have until Sept. 1, to visit. The Boneyard has been a fan-favorite among young explorers since Animal Kingdom first opened its gates. Starting Sept. 2, the area will be closed to allow for the next phase of site work for the Tropical Americas project.

Disney has also confirmed that the Tropical Americas expansion will feature a new kids’ play area. Specific details regarding the design or theme of this upcoming play area have not yet been released, but a successor to The Boneyard is indeed on its way.

In this new 11-acre land land guests will be able to visit Pueblo Esperanza, a lush and sprawling town featuring a large fountain where villagers like to gather and tell stories. The town will be full of life with an open-air market and a large hacienda, which will be one of the largest quick-service restaurants at Disney World.

The new land will also include three new attractions:

  • An all-new adventure centered on Indiana Jones will be different from any other Indy experience around the world. Guests will venture inside a Mayan temple where Indy’s discovered a new place to explore. Amid rumors of a mythical creature living deep within the temple, this thrilling new story will take guests along for the ride with the famed archaeologist.
  • The first-ever “Encanto”-themed attraction will bring casita to life as guests join the beloved Madrigal family on the day Antonio receives his special gift, the ability to communicate with animals. Guests will feel like part of the family Madrigal as they join the celebration and explore their magical home like never before.
  • Guests will also get to enjoy a beautiful carousel featuring intricate wood carvings of animals from Disney stories, created by an Esperanza resident. This new take on a classic attraction is sure to become a favorite for young families and the young at heart.

The new Tropical Americas land will open in 2027.
