Living on the rocky slopes and arid plateaus of southwestern Africa, the Hartmann’s mountain zebra is have a unique striping pattern. Their necks and torsos boast vertical stripes, while their hindquarters display horizontal bands. They are also distinguished by their clear, white bellies, free from stripes.

Despite packing a punch in terms of personality, Hartmann’s zebras are on the smaller side of the zebra family. Standing at a height of 4 to 5 feet tall with bodies measuring 6 to 8.5 feet, adults typically weigh between 450 and 820 pounds. Interestingly, males and females are roughly the same size with minimal physical differences between them.
