How to cheer on runners during Disney World marathon weekend
The Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend kicks off today with the Health & Fitness Expo at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex followed by the 5K, 10K, Half Marathon and Marathon over the next four days.
As the runners prepare for races, so should the cheering squads. Disney has a few spectator tips and viewing locations for each of the races.
Spectator tips
A few things to be aware of:
- Spectator viewing on open roadways and overpasses is not allowed.
- For the athletes’ safety, don’t hand out any food and/or beverage items to athletes along the race course. This is strictly prohibited.
- If you’re making a sign, try using the brightest paper you can find – it’ll really help athletes be able to see it in the early morning hours before the sun comes up – and help your athlete pick out your sign from further distances.
- Know your athlete’s pace so you know when to be at a viewing location and make it more likely you’ll see your friends and family run. Be aware there will be a lot of roads closed during the races that could make moving around Disney World a bit difficult. Here’s a look at which roads are closed.
- Plan your viewing locations ahead of time and be aware of how far apart they are from each other. For example, if you want to see your athlete in EPCOT, you may not be able to make it to the finish line to see them complete the race– so set a viewing strategy and prioritize your locations ahead of time.
- Know what your athlete is wearing so you can easily pick them out.
- Have fun – cheer for everyone you see – and don’t forget your coffee!
