Disney World union members approve contract with higher minimum wage

Walt Disney World Cast Members who are part of the Service Trades Council Union have voted overwhelmingly to ratify a new contract that will increase their minimum wage to $18 per hour.

The vote, which saw 97% of full-time Cast Members who voted in favor of the new contract, comes after a previous proposal was rejected by a 96% margin in February.

The new five-year agreement not only raises the minimum wage but also includes other benefits such as affordable medical coverage and access to the Disney Aspire program, which provides 100% paid tuition for higher education. More than 12,500 full-time Cast Members voted on the contract.

Walt Disney World President Jeff Vahle expressed his excitement about the vote’s results, saying that Cast Members are at the heart of the Walt Disney World experience, and the new contract represents a significant increase in wages, benefits, and access to education. This vote is a testament to the strength of the union and the commitment of Walt Disney World to its employees.

The new contract is a significant victory for the Cast Members who have been fighting for higher wages and better working conditions. Many Cast Members have faced financial struggles due to the low wages, and this increase will help them meet their basic needs, such as housing, food, and healthcare. It will also enable them to access higher education and improve their future prospects.

The Service Trades Council Union consists of six unions, including the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, UNITE HERE, International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, and the Transport Workers Union of America. The 43,000 union members work in various roles at Walt Disney World, including custodial, attractions, merchandise, and transportation.
