Rules for dressing up for 2023 Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party

Actually, everyone is encouraged to dress up when attending the special-ticketed Magic Kingdom event this year (taking place on select nights from Aug. 11 through Nov. 1, 2023). After all, it is a Halloween party.

A good Halloween party means dressing up. Normally Walt Disney World doesn’t allow those 14 years old or older to wear a costume, but there are exceptions to the rules during the 2023 Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party.

But there are still rules that need to be followed, and we have a few tips to help you out as well.

The Rules for dressing up for Halloween Party

Guests who do not adhere to Disney’s guidelines may be refused entry into, and/or removed from Disney parks, unless his or her costume can be modified to meet the following standards:

  • Appropriate attire only: Disney reserves the right to deny admission to or remove any person wearing attire that is considered inappropriate or attire that could detract from the experience of other Guests. Costumes must be family-friendly and may not be obstructive, offensive, objectionable or violent.
  • Dress as your favorite character, but no autographs: All Guests may dress as their favorite character, but may not pose for pictures or sign autographs for other Guests.
  • No realistic-looking weapons: Costumes may not contain any weapons that resemble or could easily be mistaken for an actual weapon.
  • No sharp objects: Costumes may not contain sharp objects, pointed objects or materials that may accidentally strike another Guest.

For those 13 and under:

  • Costumes and some masks may be worn, as long as the mask does not cover the entire face and eyes are visible.

For those 14 and older:

  • Layered costumes discouraged: Layered costumes or costume props that surround the entire body are strongly discouraged and may be subject to additional security screening.
  • The high-water pant rule: Costumes may not reach or drag on the ground. (for example, full-length Princess dresses)
  • Capes: Yes, capes are allowed as long as the length does not go below the waist. (But it might be better to follow the Edna Mode says, “No capes.”)
  • Themed attire: Themed T-shirts, blouses, sweatshirts and hats are acceptable.
  • Acceptable accessories include: transparent wings, plastic light sabers, toy swords and tutus. Headwear may be worn as long as it does not cover the face.
  • No masks: Masks of any kind may not be worn.

Tips

Prepare for the heat: As everyone knows Florida is hot. Even though these events will be taking place from 7 p.m. to midnight, the low temperature at night is still warm. We have been suffering with hot temps this year with a “Feels Like” regularly over 100 degrees during the day and the nights have been in 80’s recently. In September, the average is between 72 and 74 degrees, but considering how hot this summer has been, I would not count on much relief. It will slowly decrease in October to between 65 and 68 degrees. So make sure that the costume can stand the heat and is breathable.

Prepare to get wet: This is especially for those attending in August and the early part of September. The afternoon/early evening showers are something you can count on, so make sure that if the costume gets wet, it will still be comfortable. Also, if you’re planning on going on Splash Mountain, you very well, might get wet and some costumes may not hold up to you being drenched.

Comfortable shoes: Yes, high heels and cowboy boots may look good, but you are still walking around a theme park and you will be walking and standing for hours on end. Either wear comfortable shoes or bring a change of footwear.

Be creative: Have fun. You don’t need a huge complicated costume. Simple themes and Disneybounding (wearing everyday outfits that inspired by a particular character) works as well.

Coming as a group, theme it up: Get your friends and family together and choose characters from a movie or even a theme, such pirates, princesses, heroes, villains or sidekicks.
