7 big things happening at Disney World in June 2022

The summer season has begun at Walt Disney World and that means that most of the attractions will remain open and not go down for refurbishment. In addition, later this summer we should see the return of a few more shows and attractions that have not yet reopened.

In June, the resort will host the Special Olympics USA Games, a new Moonlight Magic, a major change in how Disney Genie+ works, and the last month of the EPCOT International Flower and Garden Festival.

Here’s what’s coming:

1. 2022 SPECIAL OLYMPICS USA GAMES: From June 5 through June 12 the Special Olympic games come to the central Florida, specifically to EPSN Wide World of Sports Complex where most of the games will be held, as well as Typhoon Lagoon, for the first-ever surf competition.

2. DISNEY GENIE+ CHANGE: Starting June 8, you will only be able to purchase the Disney Genie+ service, the service that allows you to use Lightning Lanes, through the My Disney Experience app only on the day of your visit to Walt Disney World, Disney announced this morning. There is currently an option to purchase the service pre-arrival as a ticket add-on. If you already purchased a ticket that includes Disney Genie+ service for dates later in 2022, don’t worry, you will be able to use the service on your visit. The service has been in high demand, during the holiday season almost half of all guests paid for the Genie+ service to access the Lightning Lanes, Disney CEO Bob Chapek said during an earnings call in February. Prior to that, about one-third of all guests were purchasing the service.

3. DISNEY WORLD 2023 VACATION BOOKINGS OPEN: On June 8, the booking window opens for Walt Disney World theme park tickets and Disney Resort stay and packages in 2023. Advanced planning is usually a must when coming to Disney World. Remember, Disney will continue celebrating its 50th anniversary through the end of March 2023. There are a number of new and returning attractions, shops and shows coming to Disney World the remainder of this year. In addition, we should learn at the D23 Expo in September what will be coming in 2023 and beyond.

4. HOOP-DEE-DOO REVUE RETURNS: On June 23, the foot-stomping hand-classing musical dinner show returns to Pioneer Hall with skits and song standards and the all-you-care-to-enjoy fried chicken and smoked BBQ pork ribs, as well as a tossed green salad, cowboy beans, fresh-baked cornbread, macaroni-and-cheese and creamy coleslaw. And, strawberry shortcake.

5. MOONLIGHT MAGIC: On June 16, Disney Vacation Club’s Moonlight Magic again takes place at Hollywood Studios. This special after-hour access is exclusively for DVC members. The nights have shorter-than-usual wait times for select park attractions, Disney Character sightings, entertainment and complimentary treats and drinks.

6. CANADA FAR AND WIDE CLOSES: On June 27, Canada Far and Wide in Circle-Vision 360 closes, likely for the upcoming 2022 EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival. The theater is usually used for the Appleseed Orchard marketplace. The food and wine festival does not begin until
