Disney issues statement on ‘scalp ’em’ chant by drill team at Magic Kingdom

Disney has issued a statement concerning a recent performance by the Port Neches-Grove High School marching band’s “Indianettes” drill team at Magic Kingdom that included a dance and song with a “scalp ’em” chant.

The high school’s mascot is the Indians.

“We regret the performance took place as it did not reflect the audition tape that was submitted. We have immediately put measures in place to ensure performances reflect the auditions,” Disney spokesperson Jacquee Whaler stated

While Disney did not allow the drill team to wear headdresses, they did allow the team to perform. However, the performance, Disney says, was not was what they saw on the audition tape.

In the past, Disney has allowed the drill team to wear the headdress in the past. Due to the historical importance and status, traditional Native American activists explain that the wearing of headdresses without the express permission of tribal leaders is an affront to their culture and traditions.

In previous appearances at Walt Disney World no videos have shown this school chant was performed. However, the chant appears to be part of the school’s cheer as seen in this video when the team is introduced during a game.
