A third baby rhino is born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in past 13 months

It has been a bountiful year for the white rhino families at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. A female calf was born in early November, making it the third white rhino baby born at Disney World in the past 13 months.

The calf is also the 13th white rhino board at Walt Disney World, according to Scott Terrell, DVM, DACVP, Director of Animal & Science Operations, Walt Disney Parks & Resorts.

The calf and mom, Lola, are now bonding backstage and will spend the next few months backstage before being allowed out on the Kilimanjaro Safaris.

“Rhinos are the world’s second-largest land mammal. After a gestation period of 16 to 18 months, white rhinos typically weigh in around 140 pounds at birth,” Terrell wrote on the Disney Parks Blog.

Lola’s calf joins a happy contingent of baby births this year, including Humphrey the Masai giraffe, Greta the hippo, and Ada the western lowland gorilla.

If you happen to see a baby rhino out on the savanna, chances are it is Ranger, the first of the three calves born.
