Baby news: Rhino birth, names announced for recent newborns

This morning, Walt Disney World welcomed its newest baby animal – a white rhino calf.

White rhinos are endangered, so this birth is extra special for this incredible species, Dr. Mark Penning, Vice President: Animals, Science and Environment, shared on his Instagram account.

This is the first baby for mom Jao. Animal care experts are giving the mom and newborn time to bond backstage. Because of this the calf’s sex and weight will not be known for some time.

Baby hippo named

The baby Nile hippopotamus born on July 12 now has a name. Paying homage to the classic children’s tale “Hansel and Gretel,” Disney animal care experts named her named her Greta. After all, she does have an older brother named Hans.

Greta was born to Tuma and has a second older brother, Augustus, who was born in 2018.

Baby gorilla named

Gorilla mom Azizi gave birth last month to a new baby, who can now be seen on the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. Azizi’s favorite place to rest with the baby is right next to the glass, where lucky guests are sometimes able to get an up-close view of the pair together.

The baby girl’s name is Ada (AH-duh)! The name comes from the Igbo people in Nigeria and can be translated to mean “first daughter.” After giving birth to two sons, it was fitting to name Azizi’s first daughter, Ada.

The animal care team formed letters using rice cereal for the gorillas to unwrap. The reveal activity was designed to stimulate the troop’s problem-solving skills and encourage them to interact with their environment.
