Disney welcomes a baby giraffe at Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Another baby has been born at Animal Kingdom. This one a 6-foot tall male giraffe. That’s right he’s already taller than most people. And he weighs 183 pounds, Scott Terrell, director of Animal & Science Operations, Walt Disney Parks & Resorts announced the Disney Parks Blog.
Born on June 10, the Masai giraffe calf is spending time with his mom, Lilly, in the backstage barn. A giraffe calf can stand and walk within 30 minutes to an hour after being born. This is needed to be able to nurse from their mom.
He has a unique butterfly marking over his right shoulder and heart-shaped markings dotting his coat. The different size and color markings on giraffes camouflage them on the savanna and distinguish the different subspecies. Masai giraffes, seen on Kilimanjaro Safaris, typically have a lacy-edged spot pattern that resembles oak leaves.
The little guy will stay backstage for a few weeks before joining his mother and the rest of the herd on Kilimanjaro Safaris’ savanna.
This baby boy joins a baby zebra born on Kilimanjaro Safaris in May and a female mandrill born in April.
