Disney’s ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ will appear on Disney+, in theaters at same time

Disney announced today that its upcoming Disney animated film “Raya and the Last Dragon” will appear both on Disney+ as a Disney Plus Premier Access option and in the theaters at the same time on March 5, 2021

The announcement came from Disney streaming head Kareem Daniel during Disney’s Investment Day. The Disney Plus Premier Access is an extra-price option the company used when releasing “Mulan.” There was no announcement on what the cost will be.

“Raya and the Last Dragon” will be Disney’s 59th film. It is written by Adele Lim, who wrote the popular “Crazy Rich Asians.” The film follows Raya, a lone warrior from the fantasy kingdom of Kumandra who teams up with a crew of misfits in her quest to find the Last Dragon and bring light and unity back to their world. Awkwafina lends her voice to Sisu, the Last Dragon, who was left on Earth in case dark forces return to the world, and Kelly Marie Tran voices the lead character, Raya.

The decision to offer this Disney film in theaters and on the streaming service, Disney+ comes after it was announced that all Warner Bros. films will appear in theaters and on HBO Max at the same time for 2021. The big difference is that the HBO Max movies will not cost extra.
