Disney to release ‘Mulan’ on Disney+ for a special premiere price of $29.99
After delaying the release of “Mulan” numerous times due to COVID-19, Disney made a major announcement that the film will be released on Disney+ in some markets, but it will come with an additional price.
The film will be offered at a premium price of $29.99 in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand on Sept. 4, 2020, Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Chapek said during the third quarter earnings call.
The company will also release the movie at the same time in theaters around the world where markets allow.
The special pay per view premiere on Disney+ of “Mulan” does not appear to be something that will be commonplace. “We are looking at Mulan as a one-off,” Chapek said.
Disney is trying to offset the cost of making a large blockbuster film by doing this pay per view item. In addition, it plans to use this as an experiment to see what demand would be like.
Eventually, the film would find its way to Disney+ for free after a while.
“Mulan” was supposed to be released earlier this year, but had four delays due to COVID-19 pandemic.
